Obituary for Rose Mary Oughton

Rose Mary Oughton

As the sun was setting over the prairies on August 11, 2016, the Heavens gained an incredible woman. Surrounded by love and embraced by family, Rose Oughton (nee Slatcher), passed away in Stonewall, Manitoba at the age of 95.
Rose was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert John Oughton, just a few days shy of their 65th wedding anniversary in 2010. She was also the remaining member of her siblings and was predeceased by her brothers, Frank, Alf and Eric Slatcher and sisters Nellie Stolhandske , Mable McPhedran and Earleen Woods. What a reunion that will be!
She is survived by sons, Harold (Myrna), Eric (Carol), Alan (Colleen), Bruce (Tabitha) and daughter-in-law, Lorraine Oughton; Grandchildren, Lana (Jerry), Darren (Tricia), Laurie (Rob), Dale, Jason (Bianca), Rick (Amber), Torie (Chris), Brette (Corey), Chad (Tara), Travis, Haley and Tyson; great-grandchildren; Fraser (Chantal), Cara, Thomas, Nikolai, Zoe, Abby, Noah, Sawyer, Blake, Bronson, Cal, Hudson and Finley.
On October 8th, 1920, Charles and Emily (nee Smeaton) Slatcher gave birth to “our” Rose, in Webb, Saskatchewan. Following the untimely death of Charles in 1927, Emily made the difficult decision to move the entire Slatcher family to a little town in Manitoba called, Stonewall. This would become the town that created the stories of love, laughter and a lot of mischief that have lasted a lifetime.
On St. Patrick’s Day in 1945, Rose Slatcher married the love of her life, Robert Oughton. Together they raised four boys on the family property. Rose was a fierce competitor and adored sports of all kinds – participating in and later in life, cheering on her brood of boys and girls as they excelled in everything she loved from baseball to ringette and you guessed it…hockey. You couldn’t find a better fan. Not only was she a cheerleader and staunch supporter, Rose was a highly respected community volunteer which garnered her well-deserved accolades and awards from her community…all of which she was too modest to mention. Her dedication to the Anglican Church might be the most prevalent of all. For over 81 years Rose attended, supported and volunteered at her church and she was a member of the Anglican Church Woman’s Auxiliary for more than half a century.
Rose’s family was her first love and we’ve been left with memories that we will cherish and share until the end of time. Whether it was playing cards or yahtzee, going on shopping trips to States, picnics in the park or simply sitting and “being”, she will live on in our hearts always. We love you!
A service honouring our Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma and dear friend will be held on Wednesday, August 17th 11:00am at the Stonewall Anglican Church of the Ascension. . Interment will follow at the Stonewall Cemetery.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the Stonewall Hospital, health care aids and all health care professionals who helped us though this difficult time. Special thanks to Michelle Lohmer and Dr. Graham for taking such good care of our Rose over the years.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Rose Oughton’s memory to the Stonewall Anglican Church in or the Grace Hospital Foundation in Winnipeg.
